Lauren Wasser Turns Tragedy Into Advocacy for Safer Women’s Health Products

Although doctors were able to save Lauren Wasser’s life, the infection left irreversible damage. Both of her legs developed gangrene, forcing the amputation of her right leg and, years later, her left leg before her 30th birthday. She described the decision as agonizing but necessary to end her constant pain and reclaim her life.

Wasser has been open about the physical and emotional toll of her recovery — from the trauma of learning about her amputation to the months she spent in a wheelchair battling depression and thoughts of hopelessness. Yet her story is also one of resilience and empowerment.

Determined to create change, she began speaking out about the hidden dangers of TSS and the chemicals used in certain menstrual products. She has cited ingredients such as dioxin, chlorine bleach, and synthetic fibers as concerning components that demand greater oversight.

Wasser has joined forces with others affected by TSS, including advocate Madeline Mosby, whose teenage daughter tragically lost her life to the same condition. Together, they’ve worked alongside Democratic congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to champion legislation that would require all feminine hygiene product manufacturers to clearly list their ingredients on packaging — a step toward transparency and consumer safety.

Today, Lauren Wasser continues to make her mark in the fashion world, modeling for luxury brands such as Lacoste, Furla, and Shiseido. She’s affectionately known as “Fashion’s Girl with the Golden Legs,” a nod to her striking golden prosthetics that symbolize strength and renewal.

Toxic Shock Syndrome occurs when bacteria naturally present on the skin enter the bloodstream and release harmful toxins. Symptoms can include high fever, confusion, vomiting, and dangerously low blood pressure. While rare, cases like Wasser’s underscore the need for education, awareness, and early intervention.

Though tampon packaging already includes TSS warnings, Lauren Wasser’s story serves as a powerful reminder that awareness saves lives. Through her advocacy and courage, she continues to inspire change, pushing for a safer, more transparent future for women everywhere.
