Joan Bennett Kennedy, Former Wife of Senator Ted Kennedy, Dies — Sons Share Touching Tributes

Joan Bennett Kennedy, former wife of the late U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and mother to three of his children, passed away peacefully at her Boston home on October 8, 2025, at the age of 89. Celebrated for her composure under pressure, unwavering resilience, and lifelong commitment to family, music, and public service, Joan’s legacy remains closely tied to the history of the Kennedy family. Prior to her marriage, she had established herself as a successful model, socialite, and accomplished classical pianist.

Joan met Ted Kennedy in 1957 through his sister Jean, and the two quickly fell in love, marrying the following year. Their 24-year marriage produced three children: Kara, Ted Jr., and Patrick. Joan is survived by Ted Jr. and Patrick, along with nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her daughter Kara tragically passed away in 2011. Throughout her marriage, Joan supported Ted during some of the most challenging moments in his life, including the assassinations of his brothers John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, as well as the Chappaquiddick incident in 1969, which occurred while Joan was pregnant.

Despite personal struggles, including a battle with alcohol, Joan remained a loyal and supportive partner. Although their marriage ended in divorce in 1983, she continued to lead a meaningful and accomplished life, pursuing her passions and giving back to her community.

Joan’s devotion extended beyond her family. She was a passionate advocate for the arts and mental health awareness, often drawing on her personal experiences to support and inspire others. She authored several works and narrated classical music stories, including Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. In her later years, she focused on fundraising for nonprofits and charitable initiatives in Boston, leaving a lasting mark on the city’s cultural and philanthropic landscape.
