Tragedy Strikes University of Wyoming Athletics: Fatal Crash Claims Three Student-Athletes
A heartbreaking accident near the Wyoming-Colorado border has taken the lives of three members of the University of Wyoming’s swimming and diving team, leaving the campus community in deep mourning.
The victims were identified as 19-year-old sophomore Charlie Clark from Las Vegas, 21-year-old junior Luke Slabber from Cape Town, South Africa, and 18-year-old freshman Carson Muir from Birmingham, Alabama. The deadly crash occurred Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 287, a rural stretch between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado, often recognized for its vast plains and unpredictable crosswinds.
Authorities reported that a Toyota RAV4 carrying five student-athletes lost control in the southbound lane, rolling several times before coming to rest in a nearby field. Two occupants were ejected from the vehicle, and three young athletes tragically died at the scene.
Two teammates survived the crash and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Both have since been released from the hospital. One of the survivors, who was driving at the time, is cooperating with investigators. The accident occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m.
As news spread across campus and the wider collegiate sports world, tributes began pouring in for the victims—each remembered for their dedication, talent, and leadership within the team.
